Civil Engineering Services

 

Tampa Port Authority Petroleum Handling Facilities – Roadway, utilities and facility site design for a multi-berth expansion of the Tampa Port Authority’s petroleum handling facilities.

 

East Lake Avenue – Drainage improvements including a regional pond and roadway profile redesign for the City of Tampa at East Lake Avenue and 41st Street North.

 

Reed Mine in Rockledge, Florida – Design and permitting for a 300+ acre mine expansion within the flood sensitive St. John’s River flood plain.  The mine design included a phased excavation design spanning a 10-year permit, a full reclamation plan and a 2,500 lf calibrated recharge trench to protect the surrounding wetlands.

 

City of Tampa Fire Station #8 – Site and drainage improvement to accommodate the heaviest of the City’s fire fighting vehicles.  Design included an underground stormwater collection and treatment system, and 600 lf of structural pavement.

 

The Portland Apartments – Unban in-fill design for a 68-unit, 11-story, mid-rise, apartment tower in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.  The design includes an enclosed, below grade stormwater treatment system in accordance with SWFWMD’s new and onerous Impaired Water Bodies criteria. 

 

Legacy Park Apartments in Wildwood, Florida – A 20-acre apartment complex of ten (10), three-story buildings (300-unit) involving civil/site design with roadway and off-site utility extension.  Utility design included a sanitary sewer pumping station and force main, fire and potable water service as well as all associated hydrants and backflow preventers.  The access roadway connected to FDOT’s Hwy 301 requiring driveway and drainage connection permitting and coordination.  Because the property abuts an isolated wetland and receives a substantial amount of offsite stormwater runoff, the drainage scheme and permitting required wetland mitigation and flow routing.

 

WMNF Radio Station – Civil design for a 2-story 12,000 SF community radio station on SR 574 in the Tampa urban area.  Designed as an eco-friendly, unban in-fill project, the site incorporates grassed over-flow parking, and meandering swales and retention pond to accommodate site trees.

 

Palmetto Club at Fish Hawk Town Center – Civil design for a 17,000 SF community center in the heart of Fish Hawk.  The civil design required coordination with the development’s master drainage and utility systems as well as permitting with the local and state reviewing agencies.

 

Lady Lake Apartments – Public utility extensions within a County Road right-of-way for a 24building, 336-unit apartment complex.   Sanitary sewer design consisted of a duplex pump station and a 6” force main.  Water utility design included fire and potable water service along with the associated hydrants and backflow preventers. 

 

Pinellas County Emergency Generator Facility– Civil design services to install an emergency generator facility for the Pinellas County Govern Services Building in downtown Clearwater, Florida.  The project consisted of a generator site design as well as an underground duct bank crossing a high-volume urban road in downtown Clearwater, and custom designed manhole structures.

 

US41 from 22nd Street to SR200 (I-4) – Mill and resurface with intersection improvements including R/R crossing upgrades.

 

SR 60 from 22nd Street to US41 - Mill and resurface with intersection improvements including R/R crossing upgrades.

 

Pinellas County, Oak Street Utility Relocation – Install a below grade 4x4 concrete duct bank communication, electrical and fuel line to back-up generator serving the Pinellas County Government Services Building.  Services included utility relocation, roadway design, stormwater relocation and permitting.

 

Sun Trust Bank Utility Relocation – Reroute 8” sanitary sewer line to avoid bank development area.  Including design, permits and construction phase services.

 

Wimauma Drainage Improvements – 20 Acre drainage study and determination of corrective measures to correct a history of flooding in a residential neighborhood.

 

Gandy Golf Driving Range Drainage Study – Stormwater modeling and field observation to determine the cause of widespread flooding over a 9 acre golf driving range as a result of an adjacent single-family development.

 

Honore Avenue Intersection Improvements – Roadway design including maintenance of pedestrian and roadway traffic, utility relocation, permitting and construction phase services.

 

City of Tampa, Cancer Survivors Park – Large-scale outdoor facility including amphitheater, and landscaped berms, walking paths and planters.

 

City of Plant City Effluent Transmission Line – NPDES permitting for a 12 mile, 32”-24” effluent transmission line from the city’s WWTP north along SR39 to a private sector end user.

 

Durant/Dover/Little Road Intersection Improvements – Roadway design for a Hillsborough County intersection improvement project.  The intersection was improved by designing an Scurve to align the offset roads, Dover Road and Little Road.  Design elements included horizontal and vertical realignment, maintenance of traffic plans, stormwater modeling, utility relocation and permitting.

 

Apollo Beach Park Expansion – Civil design for a 10 acre park expansion which includes a dog park and a 12,000 SF skate park.  Design elements also included an access roadway, lighting, sidewalks, utility extension and restroom facilities.

 

Hillsborough Co. Parks and Recreation, Park Improvements - Demolition of existing boat launch ramps and structural design of new launch ramps, seawalls and pedestrian facilities at Hillsborough County’s Riverview, Sun City Heritage and Ruskin Commongood parks.

 

Gandy Townhomes - Civil design of a 1 acre with 4 buildings (19 units), dry retention ponds, subsurface detention system (beneath roadway) consisting of perforated aluminum pipes and crushed rock, roadway design and permitting.

 

Giddens Park – Award winning civil and structural engineering for a five acre City of Tampa park renovation project.  The civil design consisted of adding a parking lot, improving the existing drainage system, reconfiguring the recreation areas, and adding a meandering sidewalk around existing trees throughout the park.  The structural design consisted of adding decorative entry signs, gate structures, and a dumpster enclosure.  Project management was a key element, given the community involvement.  Several local meetings were held during the design process to facilitate the phase development and amenities.  

 

Hillsborough County Classroom for Kids Project – A civil design project for the Hillsborough County School Board.  The project consisted of adding a 16-classroom building, parking, and a large play court to three different elementary schools.  Challenges included; designing a creative drainage system for each school thereby minimizing the impact on the student’s play area, extending the existing utilities, and coordinating the effort with the daily operations of the schools.

SFWMD Acceler8 Everglades Now Restoration C-44 Reservoir in Indiantown, Florida

An Everglades restoration project consisting of 220’ concrete distribution canal spillways with retaining walls, 70’ concrete weir structures on sheet piling with 17’ high retaining walls, and cast-in-place outflow weirs with headwalls.

City of Tampa Hillsborough River Water Treatment Plant in Tampa, Florida

Design of a modified bracing steel strut system for an existing lime silo. The project included computer analysis of the supports and modifications designed to accommodate a new lime hopper system. The project also included corrosion prevention application specifications and a restoration technique to extend the useful life of the steel structure.

 

City of Tampa Morris Bridge Water Treatment Plant in Tampa, Florida

Design of abrasion resistant steel liners for catalytic reactors. The project consisted of analyzing the high velocity zones within the catalytic reactors and designing custom-fit steel reinforcement liners to counteract erosion, thereby dramatically extending the service life of the reactors.

 

Florida College Site Improvements and Expansion in Temple Terrace, Florida

Design of various retaining walls for a parking lot expansion project along the Hillsborough River. The project consisted of overcoming difficult soil conditions and designing a cast-in-place retaining wall, in segments ranging from 3 to 12 feet in exposed height, supporting a parking lot and a detention pond.  These wall segments supported the retained earth necessary to accommodate an expanded parking lot, a lower level service drive, and a retention pond all on what once was an area of un-useable sloping terrain adjacent to the river.

This structure is a 150' 2-span Type IV AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and dual twin column piers on 18" prestressed concrete piles and pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Project Engineer.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included all elements including superstructure, substructure and bridge geometry.  Design began January 1989 and was completed August 1989.

 

SR 429 Over Fullers Cross Road in Ocoee, Florida

This structure is a 190' 2-span Type IV AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and dual twin column piers on 18" precast concrete pile and pile supported end bents on MSE abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Project Engineer.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included all elements including superstructure and substructure.  Design began August 1989 and was completed January 1990.

 

SR 429 Over Drainfield Road in Ocoee, Florida

This structure is a 45' single span bridge with a FDOT Double Tee superstructure with concrete topping and spread-footing beam seats on MSE abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Project Engineer.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included all elements including superstructure and substructure.  Design began August 1989 and was completed January 1990.

 

SR 429 Over SR 438 in Winter Garden, Florida

This structure is a 90' single span Type V AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and 18" prestressed concrete pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Project Engineer.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included all elements including superstructure, substructure and bridge geometry.  Design began June 1989 and was completed January 1990.

 

SR 429 Over CSX Railroad in Ocoee, Florida

This structure is a 210' 3-span Type IV AASHTO girder bridge with a highly skewed CIP continuous concrete deck and 2-column intermediate piers on prestressed concrete piles including pile supported end bents and MSE abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Project Engineer.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included all elements including superrstructure, substructure and bridge geometry.  Design began June 1989 and was completed January 1990.

 

SR 417 Over SR 528 in east Orange County, Florida

This structure is a 180' triple 2-span Type IV AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Engineer of Record.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included bridge geometry.  Design began February 1990 and was completed July 1990.

 

SR 417 Over SR528 SB / EB Ramp in east Orange County, Florida

This structure is a triple single spans up to 111' Type IV AASHTO girder bridge with a parallel spans over a highly curved ramp CIP continuous concrete deck and pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Engineer of Record.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included bridge geometry.  Design began Febuary 1990 and was completed July 1990.

 

SR 417 Over Moss Park Road in east Orange County, Florida

This structure is a 121' single span Type V AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Engineer of Record.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included prestressed beam design.  Design began February 1990 and was completed July 1990.

 

SR 417 Over O.U.C. Railroad in east Orange County, Florida

This structure is a 320' 3-span Type IV AASHTO  girder with a highly skewed and superelevated CIP continuous concrete deck and 4-column concrete piers on 18" prestressed concrete piles.  Mr. Catalano served as the Engineer of Record.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included piles layout, cap design and bridge geometry.  Design began December 1989 and was completed July 1990.

 

SR 417 Over Johnson Access Road in east Orange County, Florida

This structure is a 140' single span Type VI AASHTO girder bridge with a CIP continuous concrete deck and pile supported end bents on MSE wall abutments.  Mr. Catalano served as the Engineer of Record.  Mr. Catalano’s design activities included beam design and bridge geometry.  Design began January 1991 and was completed May 1991.

Structural and marine design for the demolition of existing boat launch facilities and design of new boat launch ramps, seawalls, docks and pile supported pedestrian facilities at Hillsborough County’s Riverview, Sun City Heritage and Ruskin Commongood parks.

 

Florida College Site Improvements and Expansion in Temple Terrace, Florida

Design of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls for a parking lot expansion project along the Hillsborough River. The project consisted of designing a wall system to overcome difficult soil conditions in segments ranging from 3 to 12 feet in exposed height, to support an adjacent parking lot and a detention pond.  These wall segments supported the retained earth necessary to accommodate an expanded parking lot, a lower level service drive, and a detention pond; all on what once was an area of un-useable sloping terrain adjacent to the river.

Since 1990, Mr. Catalano has personally inspected key structural elements for a variety of construction projects.  These elements include prestressed beams, columns and slabs; posttensioned foundations and elevated beams; concrete pours and reinforcement installation; masonry construction, and cast-in-place concrete walls, beams and slabs.
